Anu, B, and Jenn: Framing Poetry

Frames of Poetry

Participants will read and write poems, take photographs, and make a film in which light is the protagonist.  Participants will make connections between writing poetry and filmmaking; they will sequence images and text using the three-act structure of film, create meaning through juxtaposing text and image, and understand how choice of images, words, and sequence shape meaning and tone.

Kristina and Donnell: The Dazzlement

The Dazzlement
Participants will explore how mood and tone (in dance, visual arts, and writing) can be shaped by qualities of movement, gesture, word choice, and visual design.  Participants will play with improvisation and finding the magical in the ordinary.  They will explore how the arts can serve to deepen and expand our understanding of texts.

The groups in this workshop created experimental, light-based films, then choreographed dances to represent the same ideas through a different medium.  Below are the original films and also videos of the dances, performed by the groups.

Parting Reflection

Here are a few of the ah-has, what-ifs, yes-ands, and why-nots from our reflection conversation this afternoon. Yall were thinking faster than I could type, but I tried to catch what I could.

Kids need an audience and a take-away.
It takes more than a pen to interpret.
-- Danyele

Look at all we did in 3 hours.
Think of what we could do in a school just in a morning.
--Leah

A lot of the materials are just things we have in our classrooms.
I can do this.
--Theresa

To be creative it takes a lot of quiet thinking time within yourself.
You have to imagine what your finished product will look like.
Sometimes it's not as good as it was in your head;
sometimes it turns out sometimes better than you imagined.
-- Rosa

To succeed you have to be able to fail.
-- Gary

It takes courage to give kids the time.
The question of 'how do we get kids to do this?' is a sobering reality.
-- David

I was impressed with the way the teaching artists brought everyone into the process of making art.
It wasn't a performance, it felt more like sharing our process.
-- Gretchen

I'm thinking about collaboration and all the different kinds of collaboration that happened this week.  As facilitators,
as partners in art-making,
as administrators,
as organizers
--Cynthia

We all have our comfort and discomfort with certain art forms.
We have to remember that this is how our students feel
every time they're asked to do something they're challenged by.
We have to create an environment where it's ok to take risks and make mistakes.
--Mary

Thank you all for sharing these three days with us.  An honor and a pleasure, all of you!
Please keep this going in the comments section!
